THE JOBS MARKET IN FOOTBALL

The football industry in England is comprised of 92 professional football clubs, the national and county associations (The F.A.), governing bodies that run the leagues (The Premier League, The English Football League), and many other organisations (League Managers’ Association, The Football Foundation, Kick It Out etc.). In addition, there are professional clubs in Scotland, Wales and Ireland and 4 national associations across those countries. Each football club has many functions, not just the 1st team footballing department, but also an academy, sports science, club operations, community, media and finance departments to name but a few.

The higher the league a professional club’s 1st team is competing in, generally the more staff and internal departments they have. Academies of professional football clubs are split into 4 categories, with Category 1 being the highest. The higher the category, the more employees, and higher qualified staff, they will have working for the academy. In addition, there are a vast number of private academies working in schools and communities across the country, mostly employing casual staff, and private companies providing other services in the industry. Over 20,000 people are directly employed in football, and many in addition are indirectly employed.

FOOTBALL INDUSTRY CATEGORIES

For the whole of the industry, we have summarised the different jobs and roles into 12 job categories. Click on them below to see a brief explanation on each area. Each job category will require some level of qualification(s) and experience, industry or otherwise, when we are selecting candidates for employers.

There are 3 types of paid employment - permanent, contract and casual. Permanent roles are full-time employment positions, with no end date. Contract roles are full-time employment placements, with an end date i.e. 2 years. They can continue after this end date, either as an extended contract or sometimes become permanent. Casual are part-time roles with flexibility in the number of working hours per week, anything from 1 hour to 35 hours. Additionally, some clubs offer Student/Internship roles, which are unpaid entry level positions, offering prolonged work experience and can often lead to paid employment.
